Whole house repiping projects are currently in progress in the Champions area (Louetta, Steubner Airline), near Spring and Tomball. The M.U.D. serving those area recently conducted a pressure check and forcefully pumped water into the home waterlines, causing strain. Unfortunately, many of the homes 30 years and older in the area still have galvanized plumbing that could not hold up to the pressure. Galvanized piping is notorious for eroding and wear, and pipes this old can leak . . . or worse.
In this instance, the forced pressure check caused many joints to separate and resulted in horrendous damage and real chronic plumbing problems.
The worry is that homeowners may be unaware of tiny pinhole leaks that are absorbed by sheetrock. Sheetrock is incredibly absorbent and can quickly saturate and then collapse. We have heard of ceilings falling in due to the weight of the wet sheet rock, which poses a real danger.
